Company![]() | Press Releases March 24, 2003 Kerio Partners With Sophos to Fight Viruses in Emails Innovative technique in Kerio MailServer limits the number of viruses spread within corporate network with Sophos Anti-Virus. Santa Clara, CA – Kerio, a major provider of Internet security software for small to medium sized networks, and Sophos, a world leader in anti-virus solutions for businesses, today announced support for the Sophos Anti-Virus engine in Kerio MailServer. When it comes to fighting viruses, the most logical place to start is with email, and there are two places where a company can subject its email to a security inspection: at the mail client and at the mail server. Kerio MailServer is designed to enable easy virus scanning at the server level, elevating email messaging security for corporate environments. Traditionally, SMTP scanners provide corporations with virus protection at the gateway prior to reaching the email server. Even though most email traffic is indeed transported over the SMTP protocol and therefore goes through the SMTP scanner somewhere along the way, there are scenarios where this assumption fails. Many corporations provide their users with the comfort of web-based email. It is important to understand that web mail uses only HTTP protocol when sending an email from one internal user to another. When a user sends email with an infected attachment to another user utilizing a web mail tool, the message will be delivered without being scanned since traditional anti-virus engines only monitor the POP3 and SMTP ports. Kerio MailServer solves this problem by linking the Sophos Anti-Virus engine to MailServer’s core. This solution ensures that all email passing through Kerio MailServer - inbound and outbound as well as internal – is scanned before delivery. "For servers that handle large amounts of email, a fast virus scan is critical. Sophos Anti-Virus has a reputation for being one of the fastest virus scanning solutions available," said Dusan Vitek, Director of Marketing at Kerio Technologies, Inc. "The anti-virus scanning is one of several security measures that Kerio MailServer performs on each message. It’s absolutely critical that the virus scanning and cleaning process is swift, otherwise it could negatively affect server performance, especially in service provider environments. Sophos Anti-Virus has shown excellent results." "Email has become a key communication tool in today’s business infrastructure and Kerio is committed to protecting businesses email communication," said Philip Stockton, Strategic Alliances at Sophos, Inc. "With Kerio MailServer, threats are combated through its wide range of security features and we are delighted that Sophos Anti-Virus has been selected as a key component of its email server offering." Kerio MailServer features all services that a corporation may expect from a secure corporate email server, such as mail communication encrypted with SSL, secure web mail access with shared address books and anti-spam controls. Additionally, Kerio MailServer can limit the number of concurrent connections between the server and the remote client, which reduces the damage by a spammer with illicitly acquired user rights. Kerio MailServer uses Sophos’s anti-virus engine to scan all email on a wide range of platforms, including the Windows family as well as Red Hat Linux. Sophos’s excellent detection rates are regularly recognized and certified by a wide variety of independent testing bodies including TruSecure ICSA Labs, West Coast Labs and Virus Bulletin.
