Corporate mail server from Kerio delivers for web portal with 750,000 email users

Freemail provider Atlas.cz finds unique way to provide users with virus- and spam-free email

PRAGUE, Czech Republic and SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Growth is not always a good thing, thought Michal Blaha, when his popular portal and search engine Atlas.cz reached a half million free email accounts. Users were demanding spam and virus filtering, technology made popular by Hotmail and other freemail providers, and his mail server was already cranked up to maximum power.

He needed to find a robust alternative to Atlas.cz's current mail server quickly and with a stack of software packages on his desk, he began comparing the products. Despite the risk, he decided to test a mail server tailored for small companies which he could mold to his environment. His gamble paid off.

Atlas.cz, the second largest portal based in Prague, Czech Republic, had been hosting 750,000 free email users on the aging Microsoft Commercial Internet Server, a predecessor of Microsoft Exchange.

"For Atlas, speed, scalability, price and support are crucial. When we first came across Kerio MailServer, it was a relatively new product," says Michal Blaha, chief technology officer for Atlas. "We gave it a shot and tested its SMTP server. The results were surprisingly good. In summer 2002, we redirected all SMTP traffic to one Apple Power Mac G4 running Kerio MailServer and we experienced no delays in mail delivery or any problems with mail overload."

Atlas chose Kerio MailServer over the competing mail servers and started designing the final architecture. It is a cluster of five mail servers, using NOD32 for the antivirus control and built-in spamassassin.org engine for spam filtering. The solution has been running for six months straight with no down time.

Atlas had started as a small startup several years ago and emerged as multinational company with offices in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Kerio Technologies, the maker of Kerio MailServer, has versions for Windows, Red Hat Linux, and Mac OS X and optionally offers built-in McAfee Anti-Virus for all three platforms. The case study about the Atlas installation can be downloaded at http://www.kerio.com/img/media/atlas.pdf .
