Kerio Connect and iOS 5 means calendar management, encrypted emails, and synchronized tasks

Apple's iOS 5 is out, and if you're like me, you've already updated your iPhone 4 and iPad 2, or you'll be getting your new iPhone 4S soon. Either way, you're probably wondering about compatibility with Kerio Connect. Here's a short Q&A that should answer some of your questions.

Does Kerio Connect support iOS 5?
Yes! iOS 5 will officially be supported in Kerio Connect 7.3.0 (currently in public RC1, which means we are really close to public release).

Are there new features in iOS5 that Kerio Connect supports?
Yes. If your iOS 5 device is connected to Kerio Connect 7.3 via Exchange ActiveSync, you can:

  • Add/delete/rename calendars on your device. If you use iCal on Mac OS X, keep in mind that when you add a new calendar on your device, it will not be synchronized with iCal. This is a limitation of CalDAV and Exchange ActiveSync. Existing calendars will be synchronized to the device with no issues. In all other calendar clients such as Microsoft Outlook or Kerio WebMail, the new calendar created on the device will synchronize and show up as a subfolder of the main calendar. The color of a calendar event can also be changed on the device, however the color is saved locally and not synced with Kerio Connect.
  • Read/send S/MIME signed or encrypted emails on the iOS 5 device. To do so, install your private encryption certificate to the device (you can do it via browser or email) and enable S/MIME in Exchange ActiveSync account settings (this is a global setting so all emails sent from the Exchange ActiveSync account will be signed/encrypted). When you send a message, the recipient's public encryption certificate is automatically downloaded from Kerio Connect via Kerio Global Address List and used to sign/encrypt the outgoing message (just make sure that public encryption certificates of all recipients are already stored in your public or private contacts).
  • Synchronize Tasks. iOS 5 features a new App called Reminders. Kerio Connect 7.3 will sync Reminders created on your device as Tasks in Outlook, Entourage, and Kerio WebMail and as Reminders in iCal.
  • For a complete list of new features in iOS5, see apple.com/ios/features.

What happens if I update my device to iOS 5 before my Kerio Connect server is updated to version 7.3?
iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch running iOS 5 will work with older versions of Kerio Connect, however we strongly recommend using version 7.2.3 at a minimum. Here are a few limitations that you should be aware of:

  • It is not possible to create/rename calendars in Exchange ActiveSync account.
  • S/MIME support does not work.

What about iCloud? Does iCloud have any impact on Kerio Connect?
No. Kerio Connect and iCloud do not work together in any way so iCloud does not require any support from Kerio Connect.

Will Kerio Connect still support older iOS versions?
Yes. We will continue support for all iOS versions.
