Would you work at the same company for 10 years?
Well Pavel Špalek (Senior Developer) and Otakar Leopold (Senior Developer) have, and Jeff Wadlow (Senior Support Engineer) is celebrating an amazing fifteen years at Kerio. We quizzed all three Kerio team members to understand why they've stuck around. Here's what they said...
How did you find out about Kerio?
OL: "It was just coincidence. I was finishing my studies at ČVUT, searched for job and found Kerio."
PS: "I was aware of Kerio Control and two of my friends were working for Kerio. One of them contacted me and asked me if I wanted to apply for a job."
JW: "I answered a job posting on Monster.com."
Was there anything that stood out about your first day at Kerio?
OL: "It was go, go, go. I had to install software for developers and tried to build Kerio internal libraries".
PS: "Honestly I don't remember my first day, but I know that I joined with a big level of respect for Kerio, because the company has a reputation of being cutting-edge and one that chooses their employees carefully".
JW: "I liked how informal everything was. My first day was the last day I had to wear a dress shirt and tie!"
Can you describe Kerio in one word?
OL: "Community"
PS: "Cooperation"
JW: "Rewarding... Rewarding in knowledge. Rewarding in friendships. Rewarding in compensation."
What does Kerio mean to you on a personal and professional level?
OL: "I appreciate the friendly work environment at Kerio and the team of experienced developers."
PS: "There is openness, the willingness to share the knowledge, and awareness that we are working towards a common goal. The biggest benefit is that I consider many of my colleagues to be my friends."
JW: "Kerio keeps me on my toes. I am continually learning new things, and I am doing my best work if I am constantly improving my knowledge."
What are some of your fondest memories of your 10 years at Kerio?
OL: "The many team building activities, including Kerio Musicfest, sports days and more."
PS: "I'm always pleasantly surprised by the birthday presents I receive from HR team."
JW: "I appreciated the opportunity to visit the UK office. Everyone was so friendly and open. Our ten year anniversary party in San Franisco was also a blast! Great food and I loved the boat tour of the San Francisco bay. We have great Christmas parties and all the restaurants we have visited over the years has certainly broaden my food palette."
Can you recall a funny moment you've had at Kerio?
OL: "There have been many... I've enjoyed plenty of small funny moments that have happened each day as opposed one specific moment in the past ten years."
PS: "The willingness of my colleagues to carry out any crazy idea, including taking funny group photos and struggling to survive bike races in the snow storm."
JW "I remember one Christimas during the white elephant gift exchange when I learned just how clever Karen Miller is. She devised an exchange with another person so that both hers and their gifts were locked. I laughed and laughed about that."
What future endeavors are you looking forward to at Kerio?
OL: "As IT moves towards the cloud, I'm interested to see how we embrace it at Kerio. I read somewhere once that man is old in the moment when he doesn't want learn new things."
PS: "Our industry is evolving so quickly that even predictions from greatest visionaries seem funny after a few years, so I don't want to make the same mistake. Mammals won in the evolution race despite they were smaller, but evolved faster and they were able to adapt to the changes. Sometimes they call me "fossil", but I believe I can adapt with the future Kerio too."
JW: "I am hoping I can take part in another tech support exchange. I'd like to visit Sydney or revisit Cambridge."
